Panattoni (Ai Marmi) Pizzeria

Ai Marmi is a popular, hectic pizzeria near Piazza Sidney Sonnino in Trastevere.

One of the most popular pizzerias—and some say the best—in Trastevere, Panattoni is often known as Ai Marmi, after the marble counters, which have also earned it another nickname: ‘l’Obitorio’—the mortuary). Whatever it’s called, Panattoni / Ai Marmi / l’Obitorio can be a little crowded at times, but it’s worth it.

The tables are arranged in long rows, which makes the best use of the available space, but gives the place a slightly cramped feel. Students, tourists, and businessmen sit elbow-to-elbow. Still, the crush is soon forgiven when the pizza arrives (or if the people next to you are talking about anything particularly interesting).

The menu includes the usual pizzas, along with fried starters like suppli and filetti di baccalà—battered cod.

The hectic atmosphere and cramped conditions mean that this might not be the ideal place for a quiet romantic date, but it’s a great pizzeria to visit with friends.
