Gran Caffe La Caffettiera

La Caffettiera is a Neapolitan café with an excellent range of fresh pastries to go with your espresso.

This elegant cafe is a much-loved “salotto” of politicians and upper-crust Romans, who go to La Caffettiera to unwind over Neapolitan pastries including baba and sfogliatelle. Service is excellent and the turn-of-the-century decor gives the place a nice touch of elegance.

At lunchtime, you can choose from a range of fresh salads and grilled vegetables, as well as hot dishes like sartú, a kind of savoury cake made with rice. In the summer, try their iced tea, which is served with a spoonful of homemade granita.

The setting in Piazza di Pietra is stunning, with views of the Temple of Hadrian, but it’s best to avoid the outside seating, as the piazza and surrounding streets are frequently clogged with traffic and limousines waiting to collect people from the nearby offices.

And if you find yourself in Naples, their sister cafe—the original La Caffettiera—is in Piazza dei Martiri.
