Giolitti

One of the great gelaterias of Rome, Giolitti has been making gelato for over a hundred years.

For many, Giolitti is an institution and a must-visit during their time in Rome, just as much as the Colosseum or the (nearby) Pantheon. The ice cream at Giolitti is really good, but not our favourite in Rome (it’s not quite in the same league as, say, Gelateria Fatamorgana or Ciampini).

The variety of flavours is remarkable; among others they offer champagne and beer flavours. The cocomero (watermelon) gelato has a refreshing taste, and even seeds… made of chocolate chips.

Although there’s a spacious salon for people who want to eat on the premises, the prices are considerably higher. If you do decide to eat something in the cafĂ©, the Coppa Giolitti is a tasty blend of chocolate ice cream, crema, and zabaglione, and the recipe apparently dates back to 1920.

There’s another branch in EUR, at Viale Oceania, 90.
