Gelateria del Teatro
Imaginative flavours, friendly service, and a beautiful location make Gelateria del Teatro one of the most exceptional gelaterias of Rome.
It’s buried right in the heart of the narrow, winding streets of the historical centre, those streets that are still surprisingly untouched because tourists never seem to think to go down them (or perhaps because we were there in the last baking-hot days of August, when nobody else was around).
Gelateria del Teatro occupies its own little courtyard (see below) below the theatre from which it takes its name. It’s quiet and pleasant, with a couple of tables.
Flavour experimentation can’t always come off, of course, but the flavours we tried at the Teatro were delicious: a chocolate with Nero D’Avola (red wine) was rich and sludgy, the alcohol giving it a different consistency, and might be best enjoyed on its own. Others we tried were good too, but the winner on our last visit was salvia e lampone—sage ice cream with a raspberry ripple. If you imagine how good that could be, that’s how good it was.
As well as the gelati, they offer good granite, and you can even arrange to go and see the gelato being made. They have gluten-free cones, as do an increasing number of Rome gelaterias. These may not have quite the light crispy bite of their cousins, but it’s good that Coeliacs are getting the option.
