Cristalli di Zucchero
Cristalli di Zucchero is a Parisian-style pasticceria that specialises in upmarket, beautifully presented cakes.
Almost invisible unless you’re looking for it, Cristalli di Zucchero is tucked away where Via di San Teodoro meets the western end of the Circus Maximus (closest to the river).
The staff are friendly and attentive, taking the time to explain the delicacies on offer and help match the right customer to the right cake. This great service combines with the attractive design and quality of the food to make a trip to Cristalli di Zucchero a great experience—a real old-fashioned treat!
We tried the Stromboli—a light cake topped with fruit and cream—and the Pear Williams, a dome of white chocolate mousse and pear. Individual cakes and tarts start around €2-€3, and they also do mixed trays of very tempting miniatures, or you can have a single one with your coffee for 50 cents. (Speaking of takeaway, our friends brought some of their castagnole and bigné to a dinner party, all of which were superb.)
As well as the cakes, they serve croissants and a few other savoury snacks, along with a range of cold drinks. They also have coffee.
Finally, it’s worth mentioning that this is actually the second Cristalli di Zucchero store in Rome. The first is on Via di Val Tellina, 114 in Monteverde (tel. 06 58230323).
